Presidents Report – September 2013
This is my final President’s Message as I’m stepping down at the AGM on Saturday.
It has been a year of ups and downs and I’d like to thank you all for your patience. I’d also like to thank each and every member of the committee. I admire each of you for your commitment to the GCWA as a genuine community based, non-profit organisation. The committee members have done an outstanding job, often through extremely trying personal circumstances, in keeping the association going. We’ve had broken legs, dodgy hearts, and a whole range of story-inducing moments this year. However those who have been there every meeting have continued to come up trumps in delivering the goods to our members.
I’d particularly like to thank Martin Line who has done a sterling job as Secretary this year, and Christina Jablonski who has kept our membership shipshape, as both of them are stepping down from the committee this year. We are indeed fortunate to have some fantastic new people who have agreed to join the committee.
I’m also very pleased that, despite a number of challenges, the Gold Coast Writers Festival and Literary Luncheon are looking terrific this year, and plans are already under way for next year. I can’t wait to see our senior member, Pamela Cameron-Clarke and nine year old author, from Surfers Paradise State School, sharing a platform.
The GCWA now has in place a number of very supportive partnerships which will be of great assistance in years to come with very exciting events being planned both for GCWA members, and for an increase in Literary Tourism on the Gold and Tweed Coasts.
I sincerely hope that all members of the Association will take the opportunities offered to you in future to become involved in
- mentoring and coaching young writers
- assisting with the ‘authors in schools’ program
- pitching in to help with events as GCWA members are so good at doing.
- supporting your committee and each other in achieving your goals.
Thank you all again for the opportunity to be President of the GCWA. It’s been quite a ride.
Best wishes to you all
