President’s Report – 2014 AGM
This past year has been enormously diverse and busy for the Gold Coast Writers’ Association. There are many people who have contributed to the success of both the running of this organisation and events associated with it. Of particular note is the transfer of the Gold Coast Writers Festival to be solely conducted by the Gold Coast Writers’ Association from 2013.
This saw the festival presented at the end of October 2013, then being moved to the current dates in June. The result was that your committee conducted two festivals in one term of office, an enormous feat. I thank everyone who contributed to the success of both festivals: the generous sponsors, who offered both in-kind and financial support; the schools who hosted and participated in the Authors in Schools events; Gold Coast Libraries for their participation and use of venues; the authors and presenters who shared their knowledge and experience, including Ray Martin, Keynote at the 2013 Literary Luncheon; Kay Danes, our Patron, who extended her time home from Saudi Arabia to present the Keynote at the 2014 Literary Luncheon; and last but not least, your committee. In particular I wish to make mention of the main coordinators of the festival, Jeannie Barker, Gary Ivory and Keli Lenfield, who assisted me in bringing the Gold Coast Writers Festival to a new level.
The Gold Coast Writers’ Association cannot run without the dedication of a team of people, who in addition to commitments in life, work and study, contribute so much. They assist in offering a place and space for writers, from aspiring to accomplished, to meet, network, grow and learn. This team includes your executive committee: Gary Ivory, whose support as Vice President has been invaluable to me; Louisa Wright, our Secretary; and Gavin Fisher, Treasurer for the past five years. I also thank the entire committee for their support and amazing efforts. Earlier this year, we began fundraising efforts through sausage sizzles at Masters and Bunnings. Many thanks to Louisa for coordinating these, to the members who have participated in the sizzles, and to Masters and Bunnings for their support. We have future bookings for these fundraisers and look forward to the ongoing support of you, our members, in being able to continue holding sausage sizzles. We also held a Spring Writers Week in conjunction with Gold Coast Libraries. Thanks once again to the coordination efforts of Jeannie Barker, this was an enormous success and will now become an annual event, with plans already underway for 2015.
The coming year sees the Gold Coast Writers’ Association celebrating its 25th Anniversary. We have many ideas and plans, however these can only come to fruition with the ongoing support and efforts of the committee, members, our supporters and sponsors. I look forward to your support and a fabulous year ahead.
