President’s News – November 2015
“Life is like a wheel. Sooner or later, it always come around to where you started again.” – Stephen King
Hello fellow Members and Friends,
It’s a great privilege to formally write to you all, this being my first publication as the incoming President of the Gold Coast Writers Association. In doing so I would like to thank Angelika Heurich, the outgoing President for her contribution over the past years and her valued support, as well as that of my committee members.
I see 2016 as being a year of many challenges and growth within the Gold Coast Writers Association, and I invite everyone to think about joining the committee and help steer the association into the next decade. There are still a number of committee positions open, so please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or any of the committee members if you feel you can contribute in any way whatsoever.
Now that I have the formalities out of the way, let me tell you about our fantastic guest speaker we had at our October meeting.
Joan Wilson-Jones—story teller, poet, song writer and farmer—kept us all entertained with her journey into writing as she cared for her husband.
Her book titled Who Cares, deals with the care that carers themselves so often need and was well received by those in attendance.
Two other surprise guests were our very own Gary Ivory and Penny Churchward. Both who are looking well, having recovered from recent illness. We certainly hope to have them back again soon.
The writing competition has also drawn to a close for both the fiction and non-fiction categories. The finalists had the opportunity of polishing their manuscripts before submission to Allen & Unwin and Pan MacMillan for the final round of judging. Best of luck to all finalists and congratulations on making it through to the shortlists.
A special thanks to Noela Cowell for her sterling performance as competitions coordinator and to all those who judged the entries.
Please diarise the 12th December, which is the SECOND Saturday, for our end-of-year function which will be held at the Burleigh Heads Surf Lifesaving Club, down the road from Fradgley Hall. (with a much nicer view of the sea). The winners of the Writers Competition will also be announced then.
The Sausage Sizzle fundraiser is going well, with plenty of fun had at the different venues. Contact Louisa at firstname.lastname@example.org. if you would like to join us in raising funds for the association.
That’s all for now folks. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on 21st November. Until then, keep well, stay safe and write, write, write…
