President’s News – November 2014
Hello Members and Friends
It is always fascinating what we can learn, when we open our minds to new information. At the October meeting, our guest speaker, Jacqui, who uses the pen name E E Carter, dispelled the myth that Columbus believed the Earth was flat. In fact, upon reflection, the Earth had been believed to be round for millennia, since the earliest philosophers. Many thanks to Jacqui for a very interesting presentation.
Planning is underway for the 2015 Gold Coast Writers Festival and our 25th Anniversary celebrations, with the first public meeting held on October 25. It was great to see such a fabulous turnout of people with a variety of skills, both members and the public. If you would like to participate, plans are underway for monthly meetings and you are invited to attend. Keep an eye on the websites, www.goldcoastwritersfestival.com.au and www.goldcoastwriters.org, and for updates being sent out via email.
I am currently getting back into reading, having the time to do so, now I am on summer break from Uni. I have also moved and am a short walk from Elanora library. Such luxury! I plan to read and read over the break, as I continue to write my journal and perhaps make a renewed effort towards my first book. The concept of this has greatly evolved since its first spark of emergence and I am encouraged by the feedback and grade for the writing elective I undertook in the second half of the year. Let’s see what eventuates. I highly recommend the book I am reading at the moment, ‘Walking Home’, by Sonia Choquette.
Our November 15 meeting has had a slight change in content from what was promoted at the last meeting. Jeannie Barker’s presentation on understanding ‘The Cloud’ (the current term for Internet storage) and resources related to this, has been postponed due to Jeannie’s study commitments. We are very happy to have John Ahern as guest speaker. John’s wife, Mandy Johnson, was emcee at the 2015 Literary Luncheon. John will speak about his current book, ‘On the Road… with kids’, the story of travelling around Europe in a campervan. This should be very entertaining and I look forward to seeing you there.
Remember to focus on both reading and writing regularly, as you take your artistic journey and allow your imagination to flow freely. I encourage you to watch the 2009 TED talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, for further inspiration, http://www.ted.com/talks/ elizabeth_gilbert_on_genius?language=en
Have a wonderfully creative month!
