Presidents News – June 2011
Wow! What a fabulous meeting we had in May!
Many people got into the spirit of things, donning costumes for our Private Investigator themed meeting. I enjoyed the opportunity to ‘go undercover’ and wear a wig myself!
It was very challenging though to choose the best costume – finalists for the award were George Lewis, Joan Songaila, Donna Mroz Turcic, Vacen Taylor, Gavin Fisher and myself; with George, Joan, Vacen and Gaven taking home the prizes (PI / detective books).
See more photos from the meeting below.
Pat Ferguson shared the tale of the creation of her children’s book, Harry the Hermit Crab, and how she sourced an illustrator (a year 11 student). Julie Baythorpe went all out for her book launch for The Lavendar Principal, decorating the stage and providing traditional Aussie foods including the much loved lamingtons.
Tiffany Bond entertained us with stories of her adventures as an undercover private investigator and as a police officer in Brisbane.
Tiffany also shared how she came to write her book, Confessions of a Female Private Investigator, and have it published, choosing to set up her own publishing company as she didn’t want to wait on a publisher to pick it up. Her marketing strategy included asking friends to call bookshops and ask for the book and paying for billboard advertisements in Brisbane. Now that’s how you get noticed!
On 28 May I had the pleasure of attending Deborah Carlyon’s workshop Writing from the heart of your characters. The workshop was enthralling and eye-opening, giving me a new perspective on the components that combine to create believable characters. I particularly appreciated Deborah’s warm and natural presentation style and hearing her talk again about her writing journey for Mama Kuma brought back fond memories of reading the book.
