President’s News – December 2013
Hello Members and Friends
As another year comes to a close, I would like to wish you, your family and friends a wonderful Christmas. In this changing world of greater acceptance of different traditions and beliefs, it is wonderful that we embrace all the ways people view this time of year. Whatever it holds for you, may it be filled with joyous, peaceful times with family and friends.
I look forward to plans for 2014 and am excited at the possibilities that lie before us, as an organisation, as well as individual writers. Planning is underway for the 2014 Gold Coast Writers Festival, workshops are being implemented and fresh ideas for expanding the role of the association are being explored.
Community liaisons are currently being expanded, with support sought for funding and other assistance that will enable us to grow the Festival. It is also important to embrace the talents and resources within our organisation. If you have connections to suggest when creating such an enormous event, your feedback would be most welcome. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The November meeting offered a variety of information. It included a book introduction by Karen Knight-Mudie; an overview of the new and exciting online Resources Library for members by Jeannie Barker; and an entertaining and informative session with guest speaker Timothy Ferguson, from Gold Coast Libraries. The services and resources available through the libraries are second to none in Australia. Thank you Timothy.
I would like to thank Keli Lenfield for coming on board to create the newsletter, as Vesna is currently away on important family matters. Several other members of the committee have offered to assist with the newsletter as required. This is greatly appreciated.
There is normally no newsletter in January, however we may have a smaller, email only edition, sent out at the beginning of the year, with a return to a full newsletter in February. Discussions are underway regarding the costs and logistics of mailing out the newsletter to members who have opted for this. Currently the cost is around $15-$20 per member, per year, plus extra time and effort for committee member(s) responsible for this. I will be in touch personally with those members on the mailing list to find a suitable and acceptable compromise.
To all who have, and continue to contribute their voluntary time to committee matters and the running of the association, I offer my deepest gratitude. It is certainly a team effort.
I hope to see you at the meeting on December 14, with guest speaker Candice Lemon-Scott and a book launch by George Lewis. Please note that this is the second Saturday, as the third Saturday falls too close to Christmas. We will be having a normal meeting, not a Christmas party as in previous years. Keep an eye on the website for regular updates: www.goldcoastwriters.org
Wishing you a wonderful year of creativity, health, peace and happiness.
