President’s News – April 2010
Greetings fellow writers
Looking out over the crowd at the March meeting while our guest speaker was talking provided a very interesting experience. There were plenty of nodding heads as people obviously heartily agreed with Kerry Whitney’s stories about the reading challenges faced by boys; and then there were also a number of members who appeared (from their body language) to have a very different experience or opinion. It certainly made for an interesting topic, some great audience participation and stimulating conversations after the meeting.
Thanks Kerry for sharing information about the huge gap in the market that’s just waiting to be tapped into!
Anna Bonshek’s book launch for Heniek was fascinating. I particularly liked hearing about her techniques for recording the story and transferring that into a book. A great read if you are considering something similar or perhaps even a memoir.
The GCWA workshop on 26th was great fun to participate in (I filled in for Andy McDermott who was not able to present his publishing talk on that date). Kathy Stewart provided some fantastic information on writing novels and the group had fun with character descriptions and painting word pictures. Leo Petrik inspired and motivated participants as he shared his publishing and revenue generation model. I shared some tips on marketing for authors – both online and off.
“Kathy Stewart’s session provided useful information and answered many of the questions I’d pondered for a long time. Of particular value were the written exercises where two people were provided with a single picture. Each person’s response to the same picture differed. This must be how readers respond individually to our writing, interpreting it in a variety of ways.” – Kerry Lown Whalen
Feedback has been very positive (see the website to read more); of particular note is that some people felt that an all day workshop was too long. In consideration of that feedback we may well consider offering occasional half-day workshops so I would love to hear members opinions on that potential option – please email or chat with me at a meeting if you have a suggestion or comment.
Look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon.
