Presidents News – September 2011
ByGreetings fellow writers
The August meeting was a thriller! Hearing how renowned author Katherine Howell builds suspense in her novels was fascinating. As a reader, I sometimes take for granted the work that is involved in creating a truly great novel: creating believable characters, building suspense, providing a satisfying ending, and much more. Katherine succeeds on all levels and I have to thank her for giving me quite a few sleepless nights with her un-put-down-able books.
Katherine also shared with us some of her covers from the various editions of her books published worldwide. The foreign language editions were interesting, since a literal translation of the title is not always possible, and her ‘collection’ should inspire us all to begin working on a collection of our own.
You can read more about Katherine and her books, Frantic, The Darkest Hour, Cold Justice and Violent Exposure on her website: www.katherinehowell.com

Member Renewal Prize
Congratulations to Maria Speerin on winning the member renewal prize this year. Maria could not believe that she had won the Macquarie Dictionary (RRP $49.95) supplied by Pan Macmillan Australia.
GCWA AGM
The Annual General Meeting is almost upon us. The current committee will step down from their positions and the new committee will be inducted. This year we have seventeen nominations so we are sure to have a very strong and capable committee for 2011-2012.
Open Mike
Don’t forget to call or email if you wish to book in for the open mike session at the September meeting. You have three minutes to share some of your writing with your peers. It’s a great opportunity to practice speaking / reading to an audience, to help build your confidence, and to receive feedback from your peers.
See you at the AGM.
